5. NOVICE AV SPANIEL STAKE- Newtown.
The best laid plans.....😫😱😫
The weather was horrendous! Sleet, snow, torrential rain in high winds at 2 degrees, not accounting for wind chill factor. Yet all competitors and judges, stewards and even the photographer turned up, and off we set. Those that have been there will know that this location is very exposed, and plentiful in its supply of game. Our thanks go to James Shearer for his invitation and tireless commitment to accommodating our trials, especially under such horrendous weather conditions.
No sooner had the first two dogs been cast off, James noticed that one of the guns looked unwell, and with safety in mind he offered to take his gun just in time as the lad passed out, James managed to ease him down so that he didn't injure himself. I'd like to thank everyone at the trial for making the best out of a bad situation... I think I had the best of it, back at the keepers house by the fire with the gun, looked after by Wendy, and returned to the trial to do the awards at 1pm.
A swift presentation was made, the judges comment was that the weather had beaten the dogs and handlers, which made the awards quite outstanding I thought.
